In an area whose unprecedented growth is rapidly changing the demographic makeup of its neighborhoods, local students are faced with unique challenges and seek opportunities to further support their dreams. To help, weekdays from 3-8pm, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula’s Forest High School Center opens its doors to Redwood City's teens.
Averaging 100+ high schoolers daily, Forest members enjoy use of the newly transformed facility, which features fresh paint, a new front desk, cafe tables, sofas, and leather chairs donated by a local tech company. But The Forest is much more than a pretty face; since launching on August 22nd, membership has steadily grown due to the clubhouse’s medley of teen-focused activities, healthy hot meals, and quality enrichment programming. The revamped high school center provides upwards of 265 youth with structured expanded learning time in a safe, fun-filled and educational environment. Every day starts with academic success. At The Forest, 17 tutors are in rotation to support Study Slam – club-wide homework and educational hours – from 3-5pm. In the same time block, three Forest staff travel to Sequoia High School in partnership with the Sequoia After-School Focused Enrichment (SAFE) program, providing academic support at the school site before shuttling teens back to the clubhouse. From 5-6pm, students are served dinner and get time to unwind and connect with their peers and mentors around the clubhouse. The kids also make use of two HD TVs, a new table tennis set, and a foosball table in between study time. Electives like Music and Video Production, Digital Art, Graffiti Art, and Soccer fill the remaining hours. “We own Fridays Fifth Quarter” activities such as soccer tournaments, dances, and even a Snapchat-enabled scavenger hunt have ensured numbers remain in the upper 80’s on Friday evenings. Twice a week, in-house counseling services are available, although The Forest aspires to extend counseling to four days a week to better serve its teens. As the Forest continues to grow, plans to increase the variety of programing include the addition of dance and technology courses. While dance is set to begin in October, there are few prospects for tech – ironic in Silicon Valley. Forest teens desire exposure to skills like coding, computer programming, and app development, but it has proven difficult to find an instructor and meet student demand. Tech-focused programming is critical to prepare students to embrace the new industries emerging in their own backyard, and engaging minority youth with such an offering could help fill the diversity pipeline that tech giants like Google and Facebook admit they’re lacking and are actively working to solve. Laying the foundation for the future of The Forest is the Keystone Leadership Program. Teens in Keystone develop strong character and leadership skills, work on community projects, and foster a sense of culture within the club. “If there was not a Boys and Girls Club or C&G, I don't know where I'd be now,” said longtime member Marie Zepeda, 18. Marie loves “how supportive people are — mentors and teens.” The high school center’s goal is to become an entirely youth-led facility, and Keystoners are at the forefront of this initiative by taking the time to learn about contemporary issues, discuss solutions, and evolve into better-informed global citizens. The Forest is a place where students can go to find support outside of traditional school or home contexts, and this is just the beginning. The variety of educational, socio-emotional, and extracurricular activities has the space abuzz with energy.
